Historical Origins
Black Tourmaline, was known as "schorl" and makes up around 95% of all Tourmaline specimens. Its name originates to at least 1400 from a German village, Zschorlau, where tin miners unearthed the dark gem. Over time, the village's name transformed into "schurl" in the descriptions penned by medieval German natural historians. Situated within the western Ore Mountains near Germany and the Czech Republic, the village once thrived as a mining hub but today it primarily produces Calcite, Fluorite, and Marble. The oldest record of Tourmaline's healing powers dates back to a lapidary published in 1632 calling it "the stone of wisdom, that is clear and resistant to all vagaries of fate."

Tourmaline is created when liquid magma from a volcanic explosion cools and solidifies into igneous rocks. During cooling, borosilica acid undergoes a remarkable shift from gas/liquid to solid Tourmaline compounds. The term "Tourmaline" encompasses 11 diverse borosilicate mineral variations that span the color spectrum. Silicates, comprising Silicon and Oxygen, shape its structure, forming various minerals.
An intriguing feature of Tourmaline is its piezoelectricity, meaning it generates an electric charge when heated or rubbed, attracting lightweight objects. This unique trait, documented in the 18th century, found use in devices like sonar and pressure gauges, pivotal even in WWII.
Black Tourmaline is found most prevalently in Brazil with deposits also located in countries such as Argentina, Canada, Czech Republic, France, India, Italy, Namibia, Pakistan, Portugal, Sweden, and the United States.
